Brothers at arms

Deep in the middle of the forest stood Grim's spire. A giant monolithic building of dark stone which stood out starkly from the green of the forest. Strewn almost haphazardly around the spire were large stone pillars and the rubble of many who had collapsed over time. How such an odd thing came to be in the forest is a question which only Grim himself could answer. Out of the spire stepped a small ferret with blue eyes. He loosened his blue tunic and took off his yellow scarf, setting it down on the stairs of the spire. He stepped away from the spire, pulling a staff out of the ground and calmly twirling it around in his paws. He turned around and faced the spire, a small smile spreading across his muzzle, "En garde Davey!"

A large wolf follows the ferret out of the spire. He stood a good foot taller than the ferret putting him at around six feet tall. Jet-black hair cascaded down the front of his face, obscuring the entire left side of his face. A grin split his muzzle, a twinkle entering his sky blue eye as he picked up his own staff, spinning it over his paw. "Don't hold back Whellin," he said softly, "Otherwise this will be really boring."

Whellin dropped into his stance, holding his staff before him, bare footpaws sliding across the ground, eyes warily watching Davey. Davey smirked at Whellin, lightly holding his staff in his paws, eyes locked on Whellin's. "I'll wipe that smirk off your muzzle! Have at you!" Whellin cried as he charged forwards, spinning the staff around rapidly in his paws as he attacked. Whellin's staff came in fast, the movement a blur as he feinted high, low then high again before thrusting the staff at Davey's stomach.

Davey didn't even blink as he watched the feints, watching Whellin carefully for his actual attack. He sidestepped to the right as Whellin's thrust came in, spinning quickly and swiping at Whellin with his staff. The ferret quickly darted forwards, narrowly avoiding a stinging smack on his rump. Whellin recovered quickly, turning around and charging Davey again, staff moving almost too fast to see as he attacked high and low, putting Davey back on his heels.

Davey's staff moved just as fast as Whellin's, his defense perfect as he defended himself from Whellin's onslaught. Whellin was surprised at how easily Davey moved in the black leather he wore, amazed that his booted feet always found perfect balance, never slipping on the pebbles underneath them. Davey was surprised at how long Whellin kept up his attack, not seeming to tire.

The fact that Whellin couldn't even cause Davey to move backwards seemed to be annoying the ferret, causing him to swing his staff harder, several of his blows slipping through Davey's defense bruising his arms and chest. Davey growled away the pain as Whellin's staff bruised his bones as well as his flesh. He tossed his head to the side as Whellin landed a blow on his chest, hair flying away from his face. A glowing purple eye matched his sky blue one when he looked back to Whellin.

Davey grinned and went on the offensive. He hooked his staff against Whellin's, quickly spinning them both around before pushing back, the strength of his arms easily pushing the little ferret back several steps. Then Davey began his attack. His staff moved even faster than Whellin's did. Whellin didn't even bother to attempt to block the stronger attacks of the wolf. He ducked, jumped and spun to get away from the staff that would probably do more than bruise him if it managed to connect.

Whellin quickly found his back up against a pillar so he did the only thing he could do, he jumped. He went straight up and landing lightly on the top of the pillar. Whellin grinned; the pillar was too tall for Davey to jump up and in too bad condition for Davey to climb to get him. Davey looked up at Whellin then the pillar and kicked with all his might, foot slamming into the pillar.

Whellin started wobbling as the pillar shook, eyes widening as the pillar crumbled beneath him. Whellin jumped out as far as he could, landing far enough away from Davey to recover. He quickly spun around as soon as he hit the ground, charging the wolf again as Davey approached him. He went back on the attack, this time managing to get Davey to run backwards as he attacked. Whellin allowed himself to feel confident. Now that Davey was retreating he might win this little sparring match. But Davey still had a few tricks up his sleeve.

He ran backwards quickly for two steps then back flipped, right foot lashing out at Whellin's muzzle. The move was very unexpected. Combined with the momentum of his attack Whellin had no time to dodge. Davey's foot connected with Whellin's muzzle, sending the ferret flying straight into the air, the force nearly spinning him completely over. Whellin landed on his back, staring up at the three Davey's standing above him.

"That was good Whellin," the Daveys said, "But you still have quite a bit to learn." Whellin groaned, rubbing his muzzle with one paw while holding his paw up to the Daveys. Davey reached down and pulled Whellin up to his footpaws with one paw, slipping his arm around the ferret's shoulders and leading him to the spire. "How about you make me dinner?" Whellin couldn't help but grin as his vision cleared. He allowed himself to be lead into the spire and said, "Davey, you already ate half the food at breakfast this morning."
